Small Bites: Teaching Kids Healthy Cooking and Nutrition

Small Bites is a collaboration between WeGo Together for Kids, Healthy West Chicago, and West Chicago Elementary District 33 to host cooking and snack clubs that meet twice weekly for three weeks. Cooking classes are hands-on and will meet at every school building throughout the school year.

Chefs Amy and Aaron lead classes from the Kitchen Table. We teach students how to prepare nutritious, affordable, and kid-friendly snacks. Parents and student chefs are invited to enjoy and prioritize healthy eating by coming together and recreating these nutritional and practical recipes in their homes. Students are encouraged to enjoy the art of cooking by first understanding safety precautions within the kitchen, understanding the food pyramid, and practicing healthy washing routines that keep food safe to eat. Small Bites allows students to participate in extracurricular activities and make new friends.

"Making food from home is much better than fast food because at home you can control how much salt, sugar and pepper you add!" - Small Bites Student

Additionally, the kids get to try the delicious foods that they prepare, learn about the benefits of trying foods multiple times and the health benefits of consuming whole foods.  After class, the kids get to take home what they prepared and share it with their families.  Some of the parents have mentioned that they are seeing an increase in kids' curiosity for eating vegetables.
